Purple Sock Day

When Cause worked with social entrepreneur Andrew Douglass to launch the inaugural Purple Sock Day in 2021, we made a big noise.

Purple Sock Day’s aim is to show support and solidarity with disabled entrepreneurs by buying a pair of purple socks.

Andrew wanted business leaders to hear about the campaign, so following our story-first approach we interviewed the campaign’s ambassadors about their experiences as disabled entrepreneurs, and then we used our excellent network of contacts to amplify their voices across national print, broadcast and online platforms

Our coverage was exceptional. Ambassadors appeared on the Sky News business show Ian King Live, wrote an opinion column in City AM, Purple Sock Day was the lead story in The Sun’s employment section both online and in print, and we secured coverage on BBC local radio.

That’s an audience reach of 1.75 million people, and an uplift in sales on Purple Sock Day of 10 per cent.

There is a wealth of talent in disabled entrepreneurs - if only we can harness it

If you want to invest in someone with resilience, ingenuity and the ability to adapt to change, find an entrepreneur with disabilities. We are just…

In December 2022 we went even bigger, and better. Leveraging our contacts again we arranged for Purple Sock Day to visit media publisher News International.

Ambassador Victoria Jenkins was interviewed on Times Radio, Chris Evans and Jayne Middlemiss gave Purple Sock shout-outs on their Virgin Radio shows and the Purple Sock team  met journalists, editors and sold purple socks from a dedicated stand in the building.

We also secured ambassador interviews in both Karren Brady’s Sun on Sunday column and  The Sun’s employment section, the Sunday Express and Sky News as well as extensive regional coverage in print, digital and broadcast.

Working closely with our ambassadors, our impact and reach was incredible, which featured national and regional TV, press and radio. Sam was also a joy to work with; combining a serene calmness with a tenacious approach and a black book to die for.

Our media results were phenomenal, which went far beyond my wildest expectations. I will certainly be working with Sam again for our next #PurpleSockDay campaign.”
